Mérida is the cultural center of the Yucatan – with nightly music and dace, museums, and art galleries there is always something to do or see. The city was previously the Maya city of Tho until the Spaniards took over in 1542. The white limestone present in many old buildings gives Merida its nickname – the white city.
Outside of the bustling city, Hacienda San Antonio Chalanté is a hidden gem in the Maya heartland. Situated on a 900 acre nature preserve which was previously the site of an ancient Mayan ceremonial center the hacienda is a great place to visit or stay for a night or two
